A career in Massage Therapy is a rare opportunity to combine professional artistry with the reward of making an immediate difference in the life of someone else. The health care benefits of massage therapy are recognized across many cultures and the field is continually gaining acceptance as a wise and holistic choice in the pursuit of fitness and well-being.
About the Program
This 565-contact hour course combines classroom lecture with a literal "hands-on" laboratory setting, including 50 hours of clinical work. Students who successfully complete the course are prepared to take the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) exam for licensure as a massage therapist in the State of Texas and are qualified to:
- Assess clients' soft tissue condition, joint quality, and range of motion
- Develop and propose specific massage treatment plans after consultation
- Use complementary treatments including infrared lamps, wet compresses, and whirlpool baths
- Prepare and blend oils for use in therapeutic massage
The Massage Therapy CE Certificate consists of nine (9) required course sections:
- MSSG-1011 Fundamentals I
- MSSG-1009 Health and Hygiene
- MSSG-1013 Anatomy & Physiology for Massage
- MSSG-1005 Hydrotherapy
- MSSG-2014 Pathology for Massage
- MSSG-2011 Fundamentals II
- MSSG-1007 Business Practices and Professional Ethics
- MSSG-2013 Kinesiology for Massage
- MSSG-2086 Internship for Massage Therapy
After successful completion of the above required courses, Massage Therapy students must also:
- Take and pass the Massage Board Licensing Exam (MBLEX).
- Take and pass TDLR's Jurisprudence Exam.
- Apply to TDLR to become a Licensed Massage Therapist.
- Get fingerprinted, TDLR will advise applicants on how to complete this task, once they have applied.

? What are the program requirements?
Students must have a high school diploma/GED, a proficiency in English (reading, writing, and speaking), are at least eighteen (18) years of age, and have a clean criminal record. For students in this program who may have a criminal background, please be advised that the background could keep you from being licensed by the State of Texas for this program.
If you have a question about your background and licensure, please speak with the program coordinator. You also have the right to request a criminal history evaluation letter from the applicable licensing agency.
? What is the admission process?
All students must complete the program application and turn in all required documentation before registering for classes. The application can be found on this program page.
? What are the steps to apply for your LMT in Texas?
? If I have a criminal background, can I become a Licensed Massage Therapist in Texas?
TDLR has strict guidelines regarding criminal backgrounds. Please go here for more information. For students who may have a criminal background, please be advised that the background could keep you from being licensed in the state of Texas. You have the right to request a criminal history evaluation from the licensing agency.
? Is there any Financial Assistance / Payment Plans available?
Yes, financial aid may be available for those who qualify in the form of the TPEG grant. Please go to the Financial Assistance page to apply.
? Do I have to take all the classes in the program?
All 9 classes are required to be able to apply to become a LMT in the state of Texas. (Licensed Massage Therapist).
? Where are the Massage Therapy classes held?
The first 8 classes are held at the Riverside Campus at 1020 Grove Boulevard, Austin, TX 78741 in Building E.
The Internship is held at the Highland Business Center at 5930 Middle Fiskville Road, Austin, TX 78752.
? How long is the Massage Therapy program?
The Massage Therapy program is a total of 565 Hours. ACC offers students 3 different class schedules per year.
- Fall classes begin in August/September and meet part time during the day. This class meets for 3 semesters: fall, spring, and internship during the summer.
- Spring classes begin in January and meet part time evenings and weekends. This class meets for 3 semesters: spring, summer, and internship in the fall.
- Summer Fast classes begin in May/June and meet full time 5 days a week. This intensive class meets all summer with an internship beginning in September.

? Do you offer job placement?
ACC offers career services. Career & Transfer Specialists are available to assist with your job search, and connect you with community resources. The massage program coordinator regularly receives job postings from local businesses. During Business and Professional Ethics classes, your instructor will bring in several local business owners to discuss their businesses and what they are looking for in a potential employee.
? What modalities are included in the program?
Students learn techniques in Swedish, Deep Tissue, Pregnancy, Chair, Trigger Point, Myofascial Release, Sports, Trager, Craniosacral, Postural Analysis, Range of Motion testing, and Gait Assessment. In Hydrotherapy, students learn various spa techniques, scrubs, wraps, compresses, heat and cold applications, essential oil usage, and paraffin baths.
? Are there required exams that a student must pass?
One of the steps to become a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) in the state of Texas is to take and pass the MBLEX exam.
After completing the program, students must take and pass the online jurisprudence exam. For more information go to TDLR's website.
? Can a student from a different program at a different institution attend this program?
You can attend the Massage Therapy program Education program if you are attending a different institution or program.
You can finish your required hours at ACC, once you are accepted into the program. You will need to bring your official transcript from your previous licensed massage school and complete all of the required application materials. ACC will determine what hours you need and then present the classes that are available at that time. If you only need to complete internship hours, you will be required to have a skills evaluation with the program coordinator.

Massage therapists can work in a variety of settings like: doctor's offices, chiropractors, rehabilitation clinics, spas, resorts, cruise ships, private practices, gyms, and yoga studios.
